Web Design Derry

Posted on January 26th, 2011

We had a meeting with a client today, they suggested that for 2011 they would like to revamp their site and as a cost cutting measure move to a template site for a couple of hundred dollars. They felt that a site we built for them in 2007 was dated. They wanted our opinion and to be given any pitfalls.

First we sincerely explained that technology moves, design and fashion changes, trend changes 3 years in internet terms is like a 100 dog years. We explained that when their site was built in 2007 there were no smartphones, nobody that wasn’t a nerd heard of facebook and twitter. Myspace (who?) was worth more than ford motor company and America only ever had white presidents and bankers were a bunch of good honest, hard working, stand-up guys.

The world has changed and so had their business and their industry as a whole, however in this time they had seen a direct return on their investment solely attributable to their website, they have an ok placement for general search terms, traffic is consistent and user conversion is respectable. So looking at all this why would you want to go backwards in an industry they know nothing about? I am sure that used right a template site for the right kind of starter business is certainly an alternative, but think ROI and value for money from the start and that’s what you will best have a chance at achieving. Last year we notice a lot of sites offering themed templates and hosting combined in an effort to lower cost of ownership and speed online readiness and capture a section of the marketplace to sell further services too.

There is no completing with a ‘do it yourself’ buy a copy website for $300.00 but does it sound realistic that an area of your business that is as if not more important than the bricks and mortar will succeed for less than the price of a window cleaner? Possible? yes! Chances of success, unlikely nearly impossible seeing their knowledge of the industry is infinitesimal (immeasurably small).
