IT Student Placement

Posted on January 22nd, 2011

It’s that time of year again when we receive many a CV by many a young student desperately trying to find their placement before the time runs out. The early birds started in December 2010, and the completely disorganised, foolishly aloof will finish just before this summer. Last year we received an unbelievable amount of CV’s and sadly we didn’t accept one. I thought I would make this post to give students a better understanding of what we are looking for.

All employers are looking for you to either fill a gap in their business requirements or make them/save them money. How do you do this as a placement student? Not so ease as your looking for some experience so how is it possible you can do this without knowing what you are actually doing? Few points to consider;

  • Information is key, first thing is find out about the business, do your homework and research them. Not just about what they do but where they have come from and where are they trying to go? This information is priceless if you want to standout from the turkey that just downloaded the latest CV builder plus plus smartphone application.
  • Express and highlight your natural talents and interests, everyone has them find yours. Regardless what they are if it can fit or suit the company then you’re a shoe in for the placement. Remember you are the future, so innovate you can’t expect to work for a technology company and not think about innovation, show them you will not be bumping into walls forever you can stand on your own feet and earn your keep and you never know after your student placement you might actually get some money to eat.

If the employer is serious about this process then they will understand they have to invest time, money and effort to pass skills on to you that you for free, which you can take to the competition. This is a primary reason why so many have no time for Placement and Exchange students.
